Short YouTube clip (April 21, 2023) from creator Mike Andes in which a customer demands same-day lawn mowing and expresses dislike for Bermuda grass and HOA rules. Mike Andes narrates a lesson from his lawn-care business: as the company grows you must use scheduled routes and resist ad-hoc, same-day requests to avoid high costs and inefficiency.
It looks like at the moment you had bi weekly services. Is that right?
Yeah, but I mean, the yard looked bad. I mean, you know how Bermuda grass just looks crappy in general and I hate it. But I live in a neighborhood with an hoa. You know, it's like the law. You have to have Bermuda grass. If I have to go to once a week just to get you guys to show up, I call somebody else. Okay, so you're.
Hoping for someone to come by this week and take a look and get you those services then?
No, I'm looking for someone to come mow my yard today.
When I first about starting my long hair business, I would accommodate people like this and tell them I'll be there right away. I'll be there tomorrow. As you grow your company, you have team members and employees and lots of trucks. You've got to make sure you have a systematic way of working through your service area on scheduled days, and nobody changes that. Otherwise, it gets very expensive sending employees all over town just to accommodate someone that wants to be scheduled at a certain specific time.
