Mike Andes explains that most businesses consist of three categories—sales, operations, and admin—and applies this trinity to subcontracting businesses: you still find customers (sales), outsource the operational work to a subcontractor (operations), and retain administrative responsibilities for managing both the customer and the subcontractor.

In most businesses, you have three categories, sales, operations, and admin. When it comes to a subcontracting business, you're still going to go get the sale and get the customer, but then you're going to go hire someone else, another company to do the operations, also known as the subcontractor. But you're still going to also need to do the admin work managing the customer and the subcontractor that you hired.
