THIS might put me OUT of BUSINESS

This is a vlog-style YouTube video (host: Mike Andes) following Marcus, who opened an Augusta lawn care location in Redmond, Washington. The video documents a string of setbacks—major truck repairs (and a stolen catalytic converter), customers withholding payment, and a severe finger injury requiring ER care and stitches—alongside routine jobs (aeration, top dressing, hedge trimming). Marcus is simultaneously expanding: repairing and outfitting a second truck (decals, ramp rack, green racks), hiring additional crew, and reporting being 2.5–3 weeks booked out. The narrative mixes practical lawn-work details, explicit financials, and candid operational challenges.

This video is not for the faint in heart.
I'm a little unsure if my index finger's still on or not.
Marcus opened his Augusta lawn care location in Redmond, Washington, earlier this year. But he can't catch a break. First, he had massive truck problems and repairs that caused him to have to run his business out of a U haul.
About to pay $13,000 in new truck repairs. And somebody stole the catalytic converter from it. This video might get my franchise license revoked.
And then, even when he did do work, his customers wouldn't pay him.
She hasn't paid me $150 service. Whoops. Very sorry. I'm gonna knock on your door. I'm gonna bother you until I get my payment.
And now it goes from bad to worse.
All right, Bleeding's not gonna stop. So we're gonna go to the ER right now.
Let's head to Redmond, Washington, together and check in with Marcus and see what he is doing to turn this location around and make sure he stops hemorrhaging cash and the business doesn't bleed out.
I would point, but, you know, I can't.
Live in the metropolitan area. They said parking all my bins and debris. I'm on the fifth floor of it. Clearance could get pretty low as we're up here. So sometimes I have to lay these down at the back of my truck bed. I'll kind of show you what I'm talking about as I'm driving down. I had to put the rakes down in the back of my bed sometimes if they're sticking out these little holes.
Like a grenade as I'm driving up here. So pretty low clearance, as you can see, but it just goes slow. People love parking next to me, too. I'm a great tenant. I'm working on it. Okay. There's so many hurdles that now, in hindsight, being a business owner is just like. Like, sometimes you just got to make things work. You make it work. We always do.
My growth is stunted a little bit. I was wanting to get this second truck up and going. So on Friday, I'm gonna get an appointment with Mako of Bellevue. Actually, they already have a quote for them from this truck, so looking to get that done that Friday, perhaps. And then later in the day, that Friday after the paint's on there. Gonna drive up north. We have a guy up in Bellingham, Washington, which is where our original shop is. I'm gonna drive all the way up there. It's about an hour and a half. Get the decals on there, the graphics, we should be good to go. So I'm gonna take the tailgate off of that one, put a ramp on the back. Got that sport rack back there. I have a second one already. Get the green racks on the side so I can put my tools on there that very weekend. And then I'm hoping after that'll be busy just getting everything together. Hopefully the truck's ready. And then by that Monday, I'm having another guy start.
We're here doing top dressing, overseeding. We're going to start with an aeration. It's a little lawn repair. They had just moved in this property about two months ago. So got the aerator, some soil here. Going to throw that down, coming into some seed over the top. That's a good option for people who want a little bit more level lawn sometimes. You know, in Redmond here, there's a lot of trees. Trees actually cover 48%, I think, of the entire city is covered by tree canopy, which comes with a lot of problems with your yard because the roots start growing in the yard, starts to steal water and energy from your lawn.
We're also digging out the edges along the side here. So they just removed some trees. That'll be a lot of fun to dig out the stumps.
Dig it down as far as we could get it. We'll brush off the patio here. There's some moss and stuff she said she wanted gone. And then throw down some seed. Just extending the lawn and going from there.
4 hour job. So we charge $90 per budgeted hour. So if we get it done in about an hour, an hour and a half, we'll make pretty good P4P on this one. Let's get after.
Do the P4Pmath here. 4 hours times $90 per hour. $360 times 0.33. Since Cole and myself each get 33% of the labor revenue, that's $118.80. That divided by two, since there's two of us, means each of us are going to get $60 on this job. So if we spend three hours here, so divided by three, we each get $20 per hour. So we make below base pay. So we got to do it in about two and one. Two hours or less.
Some new hats.
Oh, yeah, much better. The tongue is green.
But it'll work a lot better than this. No logo, no nothing. This is a lot better. I like this design. Definitely the green tongue. Yeah, I don't know how I feel about that, but people won't notice from a Distance, you think? Give it a couple days too. It'll get so dirty you can't even recognize the writing.
First project of the day and got stung by a wasp in the neck. Right there. Pull the stinger out. We're all good. Doing some hedge trimming and then maybe blur this. I don't know, but viewer beware. See if I still got fingers intact. Pretty numb on the index.
Slowly pull this off.
I think he's fine. It did cut it a little bit. My index finger feels like it's still intact, but it's almost completely numb. I think I hit the bone. Yeah, I'm really feeling the knee index here.
Yeah, I got myself pretty good on the index. Call you the ambulance. These two are okay. This one just got cut a little bit, but this one, yeah, that got it pretty good. I'm a little unsure if my index finger's still on or not. If not, we'll have to go get it reattached. I was trimming a bush, and it kind of bounced off, and then it hit my hand, but I take ownership of it. Should have been more safe.
We were doing pretty good on budget hours on this job up until now.
Bleeding's pretty much stopped on there. I'm just worried about my index finger right now, so we'll see. There goes one of the wasps. They smell blood in the water. That's. That's only karma because the other day I knocked down their wasp nest. I got a video of that too. Maybe they sent word. So dumb.
Still got stuff on the schedule. It's pretty bad on the index. Pretty good. See? What do you think, Cole?
I think we take a look. Yeah, we'll dry it out for a minute, get the blood stopped. We got some dogs and some little first aid kit in here, so we'll treat it with that. We might wind up taking you to the hospital. Yeah, we might need to.
Is what it is.
All right. Bleeding's not gonna stop, so we're gonna go to the ER right now. Cuts too deep for the plug to just stop, so cut me with the hedge trimmer. That one right there. So stopping what we' get that done. Sucks, but gotta take care of this, obviously.
All right. Getting an X ray. I would point, but, you know, I can't. There's one, there's two. That is brutal. My goodness.
So this one needed, I think, six or seven stitches. This one needed three stitches, but I still have feeling I could still move them. I hit the artery on this one, so it was leaking blood everywhere. It's Pretty gruesome scene. They got it cleaned out, stitched up. It's pretty painful. But we're looking good now. And seven to ten days. I'll get the stitches out, but me and Cole are gonna go finish mowing. While I was in the ER he is finishing the project like a freaking boss. He talked with the client, Got everything wrapped up. While I was doing that, he crushed it. So we're still looking actually pretty good on budget hours. Despite me being an idiot and cutting myself. So the winner of today is cold.
Just picked up P2 from the paint shop. Now I'm just following Cole. We're gonna knock out a job and then P2. They forgot to put some sort of COVID.
And some piece in the transmission. But same yellow color. Just needs the decals to get that done this weekend. That appointment's already set up and crushing it. We'll get the ramp rack and the green rack on the back of this. And P2 will be in operation. That's exciting news.
Got both trucks back to the shop. SP1, there's P2. Same color. Just needs the stickers on the side. As well as I got the ramp rack in here, I also got the green racks. And these bars along the bottom I got in here as well. So this weekend, this thing's going to be set up, ready to go.
Okay, Second truck is done. Got the number, the decals on there. My boy Carlos, just down the street, did it. Looking great, as usual. So I come all the way up here. About an hour and a half. Dr. Up to Bellingham to get these done. Because he does them so well. Very consistent. The right paint color, right decals on there. They cut it so that the letters, it's not a lot of incision. So you can still see Augusta now. Gonna head back to Bellingham. It's about an hour and a half drive. This truck needs a new battery, a new headlight. And I have a bunch of emails to get to as well. So lots of different things. Let's get it done before Monday.
I do have a pretty good client base now. We are very busy. We're about two and a half, three weeks booked out. With myself and another person. So hiring this guy right now. And then perhaps in about a month from now, almost exactly, have another guy starting. There'll be two guys in another truck, One guy with me in this truck. I'm gonna train them all. And then basically set them off with each other. And then hopefully that'll turn out good. I don't expect all them to stay. Of course, you know, plans change. Things come and go. Very high turnover industry. So we'll see.
Second truck got the ramp rack on. It's P2, there's P1. Both got the decals, both ready to go. Both fixed. No more U Hauls. Just put this on. Basically last night, just putting on the sides on now, after the long day. So a couple more bolts putting in there. These two long screws. We got one nut, and then one nut fell in this grateful. So see, kind of where they poured the concrete, it went onto the grate a little bit. So I'm not getting this thing any up anytime soon. So there's the bolt that fell down there. What am I gonna do? This is magnetic. Watch this.
There we go. Nothing can stop us. Boom.
