Botox, Invisibility, and the Relief of Being Real

In this solo episode of the Keepin It Real podcast, host Misty Tripoli—creator of the Groove Method— shares her personal journey confronting aging and the decision to use Botox. She reflects on how societal pressures tie a woman’s value to youthful appearance, describing the paradox of achieving a smooth forehead at the cost of losing facial expression. Misty recounts the exhausting cycle of anti‑aging regimens, from fitness fads to costly creams, and how the pursuit of perpetual youth drains joy. She ultimately embraces the freedom that comes with accepting invisibility and irrelevance, celebrating mature beauty as “a fine fruit.” Throughout, she invites listeners to share their own choices about aging, emphasizing a non‑judgmental stance and encouraging authenticity over conformity.

You're over 50, and the big question, if you haven't done it so far, is to inject or not to inject. You know, it's crazy, because so much of our value as women is our looks. And as we get older, there's this age of irrelevance, and you just kind of turn invisible. And, you know, I've faced this choice. I've confronted it many times. You know, I'm getting older. I look in the mirror, my face is wrinkling, my skin is changing. Things are different. It's not the same anymore. And, you know, I spent such a chunk of my life just working on loving myself and accepting my body and accepting who I was, and I get into this groove where I'm like, yeah, man. And I just felt like, oh, man, I'm the. I'm badass mofo. And I feel like it looks so good and my body feels so good. And then I turned 50 and 51 and 52, and, you know, I thought I could hang on a little longer. So I got Botox. This was a couple years ago. And I absolutely hate. I love that my forehead was all smooth instead of these, really. But I lost so much expression in my face, or at least when I looked at myself, I was like, this just looks so wrong. Oh, my God, I can't. Like, I'm so expressive when I talk, like. And none of this is moving. And I just felt so stupid. I felt like I didn't look like me. And rubbing it out every day, like, please go away. Please go away. And, you know, and then the wrinkles come back, and then I'm like, do I want to do it again? And then it's just like, you know, it comes to where we just kind of have to make peace with aging, and we all have a choice, and there's no judgment. It's like, we can all do whatever we want. It's our body. It's the one thing we can actually do. Whatever we want with if, you know, can tattoo something across your forehead if you want. And it's one of those areas that we just have the right to build a front porch on our chest if we want. Like, we can do whatever we want. And there's no judgment, whatever everybody needs to do for themselves. But we all have to, like, we're all confronted with this, you know, societal's definition of beauty and what we're all individually going to do to, you know, try to hang on. And I've just realized, especially this last year, how exhausting it is to try to cling to my youthful beauty. And the regiments and the red light therapy and the lotions and the potions and the. It's kind of like how I was when I got duped and sucked into all the fitness fads and all the fitness diets and nothing that worked. And then, you know, now it's all these expensive creams and treatments and things that you can do to help rejuvenate your skin. But then at the end of the day, you know what, we're all fucking gonna get old. We're all gonna get wrinkled. And if you don't, you look weird. I mean, it looks weird when your face is perfectly smooth, but your chest and your neck, like, it just, you can't deny aging. Like, and it's, how long are we going to cling to it and the money that it costs and the time that it takes. And, you know, I'm just at the point now where I'm like, it steals too much of my joy and my peace. And so it's the work of looking in the mirror and just being okay with my youth is over, and that's okay. And there's a part of it, this invisibility, you know, like being irrelevant is actually quite freeing. You know, not trying to impress anyone or trying to attract anyone or thinking I have to be something to be important or be beautiful. And I've always felt beautiful and I still feel beautiful, but it's just different. It's like it's not that youthful beauty anymore. It's this very mature, you know, seasoned, aged, wrinkled, like a fine fruit. And so I don't know if you're out there struggling with these decisions of, am I going to Botox or am I not going to Botox? That is the question that we all have to make. And whatever you choose to do is fine, but I just know that just how exhausting it is to try to not look old. So anyways, if that hits home with you too, give me a what's up and how you might be embracing aging and what that looks like for you and what you've decided. You know, again, no judgment like if you got the money and the time, hell do what you gotta do. But I don't know, I'd rather just be in the jungle chilling with my dogs and keeping it simple and accepting reality. Aging is part of the deal. Yeah you can deny it, can try to change it but in the end it's gonna get you. So peace and love. Finding beauty with where you're at.
