Snuffle mats work if they're big enough and hide food well. Fifteen to twenty minutes of sniffing equals an hour walk for mental stimulation, but cheap small mats fail because dogs find the food too easily. A large mat that mimics grass is worth it.

If 15 to 20 minutes of sniffing is just as stimulating as a 1-hour walk, how effective is a snuffle mat? And are some better than others? How the hell can we actually know? So I don't use snuffle mats, but I'm not against them. However, some are crap, like this one. Don't buy that one. You can spend ages hiding food in this and half of it will still be easily seen with the dog's eyes, meaning that they're not sniffing as much as you really think. Plus it's not very big. However, ones like this simulate grass a lot better, so they do a better job at hiding the food. But are snuffle mats still effective? So for a puppy, 5 minutes of sniffing can actually make a visible difference, but then they grow up into an adult dog, and to get the same effect, you now have to do around 15 to 20 minutes of sniffing. So now you have to ask yourself, is my snuffle mat big enough, and can it hold enough food? This is why I use the world's biggest snuffle mat: fields or my garden. But overall, if the mat is big enough, good enough, or you don't mind setting it up a few times to get that 15 or 20 minutes, it's all right. But sniffing alone doesn't meet your dog's needs.
