When dogs look away, it usually means they're being polite or just not interested. But if they squint, blink a lot, shrink down, or back away while avoiding your eyes, they're signaling discomfort and low confidence. The other body language around the eye contact tells you what's actually happening.

What does it mean when a dog is trying to avoid eye contact with people or another dog? Is this something to worry about? Good morning, my name is Max, and it's day 15 of how to read your dog's body language until we run out of dog to look at. And today is our last video on the eyes. So here is what you need to know about avoiding eye contact. And no, this is not what we looked at on day 11 when we were looking at fearful dogs scanning around. 90% of the time, avoiding eye contact is a polite gesture. We've looked at these clips before, where two dogs are approaching each other, they will glance away just to pop that bubble of tension. So if you see that just for a quick second, we've already established these dogs are trying to be polite. But what about the other times when dogs do this? If you see a dog that is constantly trying to avoid eye contact, this can mean two things. Number one, if this dog is also squinting, blinking lots, maybe trying to make themselves smaller, or moving away, this is a dog saying, "I'm no threat," and they're quite uncomfortable and unconfident. However, if a dog is avoiding eye contact and simply just leaning away or moving away, this is a dog just saying, "I don't want to mix." I'll see you tomorrow morning when we move on to your dog's ears.
