How to actually eradicate behaviour issues

Max Randall argues that training commands don't fix dog behaviour problems, only manage them. A dog obsessed with other dogs or wildlife will ignore recall no matter how well trained, because the real issue is an unmet need: breed-specific drives, poor sleep, lack of enrichment. Change the dog's life, not just its cues.

Hello YouTube, this is a free lesson on dog behavioural problems, and I'm going to explain behavioural problems and your dog to you in a way that you've never had it explained to you before. And in this, you're not just going to learn what to do, you're going to learn what not to do, because that is one of the most important things when it comes to learning. There's a lot of people sabotaging their own success. You're going to realize there's a lot of stuff you're putting time into which isn't just holding you back, quite frankly, it's just a waste of time. This is gonna blow your mind, and I promise you this. So a brilliant way of explaining this is talking about recall. Recall is something that every single person with a dog needs and wants, and it's also a very good example about behavioural problems. Recall is about making a word more valuable to the dog than the environment. That could be the environment itself, or— okay, that's a terrible doggy— or dogs, or I suppose mice, rabbits, Deers, squirrels, the park, the pet shop, people, everything. So of course, if we do more training— let's do some engaging games, let's do reflex to name, let's practice emergency recalls, let's do touch, let's do eye contact, let's do middle— all the different ways people practice recall, all the cool tips that you've seen on TikTok and Instagram, that actually would improve your recall. It all works. But what if the dog is just obsessed with the environment? They are an absolute rocket ship when they go outside. That thing, that dog, that park is just everything. Is there enough training in the world to to see a difference? No. And can you see that if we just constantly rely on training, just teaching the dog English and then reinforcing it loads and loads and loads, doesn't actually fix this? Because a big problem people have is that the dog is obsessed with dogs. This is a really common one. They're running up to dogs, they're disappearing, they're going crazy. Even if you get recall, can you see how you're just gonna be using it again and again every day? You haven't solved the problem, you're just managing it. And that's what training is. Training is management. Management isn't solving. So training isn't helping the dog. It's not solving the problem. It's managing the behaviour. And this is the key that people need to remember about behaviour. And that is that behaviour, okay, that's just a physical action that is showing you how the dog is feeling every day. And as long as the dog is in this state every single day, they are going to constantly be trying to practice that behaviour. Because maybe that behaviour makes them feel good. Maybe the dog is frustrated, they're stressed, they're anxious, and practicing these behaviours is what's making the dog feel good. If you're really, really hungry and you go to Tesco's, and I'm full as hell when I go to Tesco's, we're going to behave differently. We're going to want different things. We're going to make decisions, or you're going to make decisions that you're probably not very proud of. You're going to buy, buy things that you're gonna regret, because the state you're in is what's making all the decisions. The behaviors is just the physical representation of it. So can you see how if you just train the dog all the time, you're just managing the behavior and doing sweet nothing about this? So I always say to people, if all you're doing is training, then we're assuming the dog is perfectly fine, there is no actual problem. If that's not the case, then why are you only training? So this is why when you look at, say, my social media, when you look at MK9plus.com, there's very minimal amounts of training because it's just management. A lot of it is solving problems. Now, the way your dog is feeling every day, how do we change that? Well, your dog, okay, the way they feel is a result of the life the dog is living. The environment they're in, the amount they sleep, the amount of enrichment that they get, the food that they're consuming, their physical health. All of this stuff creates stress, alleviates stress, creates frustration, or alleviates frustration. So if we change the lifestyle the dog is living, simply, let's say, provide for that really frustrated dog, well, they're not going to be desperate for dogs, are they? Because dogs are a form of play, which is a form of chase, rough and tumble, biting, and these are all very, very fulfilling predatory behaviors. So if we are not giving the dog predatory behaviors, for example, which are called outlets, they just go and get them somewhere else. This is why everybody watching this that has a retrieving dog you know, your cockapoos, poodles, Labradors, spaniels, all these dogs. That's why your dogs are stealing socks around the house. It's a breed-specific behavioural problem. That's why when I rescued Enzo, my sight and scent hound, he's a hunting dog, that's why he was obsessed with everything outside. He didn't really have crazy issues at home, but God, he wanted to be the breed he is. So dogs will get breed-specific behavioural problems. They'll become really aroused, which is a load of adrenaline and dopamine, norepinephrine. And these are not trainable dogs. So when trainers do not help you with the life your dog is living, do not help you, to be honest, with the actual dog, and they just give you training to manage the behavior, that's you stuck forever. So the real goal here The message I wanted to get across is behavioural problems are not the problem. What's causing the behavioural problem is the problem that we work on, and that 99% of the time is the life the dog is living. So please stop focusing on management. Stop calling it training and just call it management, and you'll start to realise how much you're just managing your dog every day. If you want help You don't need to spend hundreds. You don't need me in your house because we're not training. You just need to learn what your dog needs to be okay. And that can be done from home. And that is what MK9plus.com was built for. Over 70 hours of lessons, which you can access for free, by the way, for 7 days. And then it is £35 a month if you want to pay monthly, as opposed to a few hundred pounds a month if you want me to come around your house and just do 4 hours. In the first month, the average watch time is 16 hours, which would take you in person with me 6 months and hundreds of pounds. So can you see how you can provide for your dog, help your dog solve the problems for way less money, way less time, get it done really quickly from your house with mcanineplus.com? So that is behavioral problems. That's your real goal. It's a lot simpler. Than you might think. It doesn't require loads of skill. You just got to learn what your dog needs to be okay. Thank you.
