A trainer argues owners should teach dogs to be calm in everyday places like pet shops and supermarkets instead of always encouraging running. Dogs that get hyperactive on walks often need practice sitting still and watching people, not more exercise.

Like, why don't you actually practice doing nothing? Get the dog used to doing nothing. We don't have to just train the dog to go outside and go, go, go. Go around a pet shop, go downtown, you know, go around clothes shops, go on public transport, go sit in the boot of your car on the edge of a supermarket car park, watch some people. Because I think a lot of you maybe hearing that have realized maybe for weeks or for months you have gone outside, you've let the dog off, and they've constantly just practiced one thing.
