Pantry update and restock! Join me for this quick over-haul!

Nicole Jensen empties her pantry, paints the shelves, and reorganizes everything around new dietary changes, mostly removing gluten. She uses clear canisters, turntables from The Container Store, and wood crates to fit bulk Costco purchases while keeping frequent-use items at eye level for easy access.
Hi there. I'm so excited to be working on this pantry. I've been wanting to work on this pantry for about a month. It's also super rainy, windy, blustery day outside, so it's a perfect day to be inside working. This pantry was a pantry that I redid about a year ago, and it has been my hands down favorite space that I reorganized last year. I enjoyed the product. I like the labeling, the organization, everything about it. I didn't even care if they left the door open when before. I was always closing the door because I hated looking at it. I didn't mind. It was just beautiful. I've since about the last month, I've been pulling things out because we do have some dietary changes. We don't really have a need for any gluten products anymore in the house. My son may have a few things, but in general, all the pasta, everything needs to come out. So I've been pulling that out, and I put it. Gave it to my sister, so she's super excited about that. And then we have different ways that we want to use the pantry. My husband's been buying more bigger packaging things, so I need to make sure that I can accommodate those coming in from Costco when he does those Costco runs. And all of a sudden I have like three or four large bags of items to store. I need to accommodate that. I'm definitely going to address the fact that when I did the overhaul last year, I didn't paint the shelves. I put contact paper down, and it's a huge regret. It was a shortcut I should not have taken because this doesn't stick. So all year long, I'm constantly been dealing with this not sticking and pushing it back up. So anyhow, I'm going to take the opportunity to do that. What I want to do first is I'm going to pull everything out, get the painting done, and then I'll start to figure out how I want to organize the pantry. So let's go. Okay. So that didn't take long. I've got stuff all over my kitchen table, all over my kitchen counter, but it's all out. So now I can get rid of the contact paper. Okay. I know this will be my least favorite part of this project, but the part that will probably pay off the most because I won't have any contact paper left. So I've got my paint ready, everything ready. Put my hair back, got my gloves. I'm ready to go. There we go. Okay. So the painting's done. I just have to Wait for it to dry. Now I'm going to clean up all the paint and start working on all the contents of the pantry. Okay. The painting's done, and I think it might need to dry overnight, which means this mess is going to be here until tomorrow. But that's okay. I'm sure my family won't mind if I say, hey, let's have pizza tonight. What I'm going to do now while I'm waiting for the paint to dry is I'm going to go through all the food, make sure everything is still good and that it's something that we want to have in the house. If it's something that's bad, I'll toss it. If it's just something that we don't want because of an allergy or preference or something, I'll set it aside and I'll donate it or give it to one of my family members so it doesn't go to waste. I'm going to get going on this. Okay. So that went pretty quick. I went through all the food, and I found the stuff that we're not going to keep. So this is our pile of things we're not going to keep, like a traditional cake mix, cereals, oatmeals, things like that. There's certain things we just can't eat in this house anymore. So I'm going to pack these up and get rid of them, and then I'm going to start to figure out how I want to organize the rest of the stuff so it can go back in the pantry. And these containers I absolutely love, they're the perfect depth for my pantry. So it's always good to measure and try to find product containers, baskets, anything that you're using that fits the depth so you can make full use of your shelves. You can subdivide each one so they have little dividers in them, or you can take it out and just have two so you can fit something a little bit larger in the container. So I really like that. And. But I'm not going to change anything up with these containers. They work perfect. They suit us, and they're just going to pop right back into the pantry once the paint's dry. Okay. It's the next day. Still raining, still stormy. So still another perfect day for this project. The paint is dry. Got everything out all over the counter, which I'll show you. And I've done some. Some organization, and I'm excited to start to put it back. And what my approach is going to be is to put things in. I'M sure I'll move them around, but just really try to get a feel for how I want to use this space. So the first way I put it in may not be the final one, but let's see how it works out. So when I'm thinking about where to place items, I think about who's going to use this pantry. So it's just my husband, myself, my daughter, and my son. I am technically now the shortest one in the house, and I'm 5 10, so I don't have any little ones. My granddaughter does come over, but that's fine. I can always help her get stuff. I do take that in consideration. If you have little ones in the house, you might want to put their stuff that you want them to have access to lower things you don't want them to have access to higher. So for me, I'm going to go with things we access most often. I'll probably try to keep, you know, waist tight and above. And then anything that we don't use as much, like baking stuff, we don't bake a lot here, I'm going to probably put that a little bit lower, and then any back stock will go down towards the bottom and maybe the very top. So that's my strategy, to utilize this space the best that we can. These back corners, we use these giant turntables. I absolutely love them. It was a great investment. I got these from the Container Store, but I love them because we're able to put all the things that we want to put in there and we use regularly. And you don't have to really go back into the corners of the cabinet. So my husband's goes up here, so that'll sit there, and he can get access to any of his stuff that he wants. And then this one is kind of. The rest of us use this one. And I'll actually move this. But it goes back here. And again, everything is super accessible. So I love that. I don't want to change that. I'm going to keep it just the way that we had it. Everybody's used to, you know, my husband's on top. The rest of us have our stuff here. Next, I'm going to fill in some of the items. These are generally heavier items, so I love these clear containers. I tried baskets, and they were a little bit too flimsy. But these clear acrylic containers work really well for this heavy stuff. This used to be for macaroni and ramen. It's actually labeled on the back. So I'm going to put that on the back because it's no longer macaroni and ramen way over in the corner. Cuz we don't use that. We have a lifetime supply of chicken stock for some reason. Again, more heavy items. But these containers work great. So now I'm on the bottom shelf. There's the floor, but then here's the bottom shelf. So what I'm going to put here are our baking supplies because we really don't bake a lot and this is the biggest change in our pantry since the last time I did it because my son was living here with his family and they baked a lot. We just don't bake as much. So we have some pizza flour. My son has a pizza maker, so. But he doesn't use it very much. Here's some sugar. And then the other thing is, you know, because we have gluten allergies, we have a lot of baking supplies that are just kind of alternative, so alternative sugars, almond flour and things like that. And they all fit nicely in this container. So unless I'm missing something and I still have quite a bit of stuff to put away, this is all of the baking items that I have. So. So it's not a ton, just a small bit over there in that corner. We'll see how it goes and see if I missed anything. But baking definitely has shrunk down. Okay, so I'm starting to fill this shelf in right here and I think I'm going to make that kind of like a rice and pasta area. So I've got some gluten free pastas. I'll probably push them over a bit. I will put in our rice holder. This is empty. I'll fill it right in a few minutes. It's just a placeholder, but that's for our rice. And then we have a couple other types of rice that we use. And we have a new one that my husband's been wanting to use. So I'm going to repurpose one of these. I need to take the label off. This is going to be another type of rice. So I think I'll put that right here. So I think that'll work perfect. I'm going to put the flax seed and granola. So any of these cereal type containers can only go on this top shelf. They don't fit very nicely here. I mean I could move them in and out of here. They just seem to fit a little bit better on top. So I'll put that there, some flaxseed and keep going. This is the Container where I keep all my back stock. So this is something I don't need regular access to. So I'm going to put this way up high in the back corner, which is a perfect spot for something like this. For items that are kind of large and bulky, like this big container, a protein powder or something you bought in bulk, it's nice to have containers that you can put at the bottom of your pantry to hold those kind of things. We have these really light wood ones. They're kind of balsa wood and they work so great. I just tuck them in the corner and it's nice to house them and keep them off to their own. And everybody knows where they are. I'm on the bottom shelf again. I have these again. Same type of wood containers are really light and like to store little things. We have like wine for cooking and some milk. And then we'll have another one that we stack on top and we keep like potatoes. We want them to stay dark in the dark, so we like to keep them in the pantry. And then these just stack on top of each other and they work really nicely. So here's the bottom. And ironically, this just came to the door right now, was just delivered. It popped right in. There was nice to store there, little stackable containers, potatoes and then there's the, the cans. So that works good. Okay, I think I'm done. I have my final placement done and I did shift things a little bit bit, but not too much. I have way more room than I expected, so that's pretty nice. But I have up top kind of some backstock items. I have storage for big bags, which was one of my goals obviously. The other goal was to paint the shelves which are done. Got the turntables. Those are awesome. I have my nuts, crackers, popcorn and chips. Snacks for my son, other snacks for the rest of the family. There's the chocolate drawer. This is a famous chocolate drawer. Everybody that comes by knows about the chocolate drawer, so that's always popular. Popcorn. And I like to keep a container with chip clips with, you know, just these things so people know where to put them when they, they take them off. And they also know where to find them. So that's a nice thing to have tucked away. And then just the rest of things, which I already showed you, the sauces, the condiments, all of that. I have my rice and pasta, gluten free pasta. And then baking supplies, which is not very vast here at our house. It's pretty minimal. And then the stuff on the bottom, which is the large, bulky storage and can storage. Overall super successful. I love it. Again, it's been one of my favorite transformations in the kitchen, and I'm glad to just kind of quickly update it and redoing it or re looking at things once a year makes a lot of sense. So this was great timing and I'm happy and I know I'll enjoy it for another year.
