Prayer isn't a wish list. Real prayer aligns you with God's will, not your desires. If prayer only benefits you, you're treating God like Santa Claus, not seeking what He actually offers.
One, the point of prayer is never you. The point of prayer is not what you want, but what God has to offer. Amen. So as you are hearing about fervent and effective prayer, understand that it begins primarily with God. The second part of this is if you are the only one benefiting from your prayer life, you have none. Should I say it again? If you are the only one benefiting from your prayer life, you do not have a prayer life. You have a list of requests. You have a wish list. You've turned the Creator of heaven and earth to become Santa Claus. God have mercy.
