It's Time To Retrain Your Brain!

Pamela Jean hosts a motivational podcast episode (Jan 4, 2021) about "retraining your brain" as the first module in her Self Care Mastery course. She teaches that self-loathing is learned, outlines common triggers (unstable family environments, addiction, abuse, bullying), and gives a four-step path: acknowledge learned self-loathing, recall when you last loved yourself, identify triggers, and reprocess trauma. She emphasizes daily self-talk (~10,000 thoughts/day), recommends journaling to track negative thoughts, and closes with encouragement to take responsibility for inner happiness.

Hello friends and welcome to A New Life podcast. This is our very first episode of 2021. It's also a so I hope that you are all having a great day, making the most of the first Monday of a brand new year. I hope you all also are feeling that great feeling of setting the reset button from moving away from what was a very difficult year and into the new hope and promise that a new year brings with it. So I'm so excited you're here. Thank you again for joining me today. I want to talk about something called retraining your brain. In my upcoming Self care Mastery course. One of the first modules that we dive into is retraining your brain. And you're probably thinking, well, what does that even mean? Well, I want to share a little bit about that with you. First of all, I want you to think about this. You were not born to not like who you are. You weren't born with self loathing. You were not born with self hatred. It's a learned behavior. That feeling of insecurity, lack of confidence, things that you don't like about yourself. You weren't born that way. So somewhere in your life that has become a learned behavior. So during this module, we take you through a process of trying to figure out when did that start? When was the last time that you truly loved who you were, that you were content and comfortable, that you looked in the mirror and you were completely happy with who you were? For a lot of people, you can't even remember when that was. It was so far back into your childhood that you don't even remember when the last time was that you really liked who you were. You might see things like, you know, someone who's overweight or who just, you know, doesn't have the right look or style or whatever. But when was the last time that you were able to look in the mirror and love who you were? What's important for us to learn and understand is what has triggered your insecurities and the self loathing. There's several dynamics and reasons that this can happen to a person, but oftentimes it is a result of a poor family environment. Perhaps you grew up in a volatile family situation where money was an issue, so everyone was always struggling with how to make ends meet. Or perhaps it was there was someone in the family that had an addiction. Whether it be alcohol or drugs. And that was an uncomfortable dynamic. Maybe you grew up in a broken home where you had one only one parent. You didn't have dual parents in your life. Maybe you were abused physically or sexually. There's a lot of dynamics that come together into creating this self loathing, lack of confidence, lack of self esteem. Maybe this was triggered when you were in elementary school or junior high. Maybe you were bullied as a young child or as a teenager. There are a lot of different things that go into us, understand into us not loving who we are. And it's really, really important that you do the hard work and try to pinpoint first of all, when was the last time you did love yourself and what triggered you into feeling the way that you do about yourself today. Once you start to do the hard work and understand your trauma, that's when you get to start reprocessing. You get to start reprocessing those old feelings from that childhood or that experience or that event in your life. And once you start the reprocessing, that's when you really start the retraining of your brain. So what is it that you say to yourself on a daily basis? What is your self talk? Have you ever given that a thought? Have you ever taken the time to consider what your self talk is? Did you know that we have approximately 10,000, 10,000 different self talk self thoughts per day? That's hard to say. 10,000 different self thought thoughts per day. What do those look like? What do those sound like? If you get up in the morning and you just talk yourself out of getting your exercise in, how is that self talk going to serve you? Do you look in the mirror and see those extra £10 or £20 or £50, whatever it is and look at that person looking back at you and have nothing nice to say? Instead of creating an action plan to take care of what you don't like about yourself, the things that you are in control of, a reality is you will become like your self talk. Let that sink in for just a second. You will become like your self talk. So if you are going through a day and remember you have 10,000 thoughts that you think about yourself every day, self thoughts per day. And most of those are negative. What kind of outcome in your life do you think you're actually going to have? The outcome is going to be filled with negativity and all that's going to do is keep you in that vicious cycle of self loathing and feeling unworthy. You know, it's easy for us to look outside of ourselves and blame other people for how we feel about ourselves. But in all reality, in all honesty, we are in charge of our thoughts, we are in charge of our attitude. We, we are in charge of our thoughts and we are in charge of how we talk to ourselves. So in the process of retraining your brain, step number one is to acknowledge first of all that you were not born to self loathe. This was a learned behavior. Step number two is to identify when was the last time you loved yourself? When was the last time you really felt good about who you are, what you did, your friend circles? When was the last time you felt really good about yourself? The third thing is to understand and pinpoint what has triggered your insecurities and your self loathing. Was it trauma? Was it bullying in school? Growing up? Was it abuse from a family member? Pinpoint what triggered your self loathing. And number four then is to understand your trauma and to start reprocessing your trauma. Because the whole goal with the Self Care Mastery course is truly for you to learn to love yourself from the inside out. Love you for exactly the way you are, exactly the way that you were made. And the first module is all about retraining your brain and retraining how you think and how you see yourself. So my suggestion for you would be to get a journal. I hope all of you have a journal, because journaling is so important for you to start writing things down and really understand how you think the way you think and why. It's really important that you do that. So with your journal, I want you to start writing down throughout a day how many times you have a negative thought about yourself or even a negative thought about someone else. Because oftentimes your negative thinking about the people around you actually stem from how you see and think about yourself. So get out your journal and start writing down all of the times that you have a negative thought about yourself or about someone else. Be very specific on what you're thinking so you can have a better understanding of why you are thinking that. So, friends, I hope that you take the time to do the hard work and do the important work of retraining your brain and how you think, because that is step number one for you to learn how to love yourself from the inside out. I hope, friends, that you have an incredible 2021. After the year that we've just gone through, you all, we all deserve it. But here's the thing. We made it. We made it through a really, really difficult year. We proved to ourselves, whole wide world that we have perseverance. We're strong, we're smart, we have strength, we have faith. We have all of those incredible things to help us succeed in any way we can. You are responsible for you and your thoughts. Happiness is an inside job. No one can make you happy except for you. So with that, my friends, I will leave you with. Have a great day. Have an incredible first week of 2020 21, and I will talk with you again next week.
Thank you for joining us today on a New Life podcast. We will see you next time.
