Aim athlete Lou Hollander is a 91 year old world champion endurance athlete who knows a thing or two about aging. Lou has competed in hundreds of triathlons around the world and is a seven time world champion. He has completed the Ironman in Hawaii dozens of times and and holds the record for the fastest person above age 70. For many years leading up to his triathlon career, Lou competed in the equestrian sport of endurance riding which put him in the hall of fame. Then his pursuits began to evolve.
One of the turning points in my athletic career was when I did the Western states 100 miles and I did endurance riding riding a horse and then we did ride and tie where I had two runners and one horse and I started doing ultra runs, 50 miles, 60 miles and I sort of peaked at 100 miles and that's the western states 100 miles and that was the premier ultra marathon.
Lou is one who always has something on the calendar, namely the next several trips to competitions. Yet when the pandemic hit, like all of us, it affected his plans.
I was signed up for the World Championship in Almere, Holland and of course that was canceled. So they rolled me over till 2021. When we were going to go to Holland again, 21 came along. What do you know, you can't get into Holland. And they decided to cancel it again. It rolled over to 2022 and now I'm going to Australia to do the World Championship in 2022. I have to give AIM credit in my evolution as a person. They fill all the nutritional needs in a cocktail that I make every morning and I mix in about 12 different products. Ready beets are very important. That covers the bases for the day. I can jump out of bed at 91, I can run up the hill behind my house, come down and not really have any issues. I don't hurt anywhere. So at 91 I feel that's a pretty good thing.
It sure is. And Lou also has a new book.
Out, Use it or Lose It. I think that's one of the most important things that everybody, whatever age should appreciate. It's so simple. How come I can still jump up and down and you know, I feel pretty good actually. I'm obviously aging. I don't like that. I don't like it any more than anybody else does. But it's sort of fun too. I'm still right there with everybody's got their wetsuits on and little numbers. I got a little number. I'm part of this party and I really enjoy that. That's how when I got old, I'd be like, no. I mean, I feel better now and more positive. Looking at the future looks, I can't hardly wait. I mean, it's so much fun. Life is really good. He's done over 3,000 races, my man. Lou. Every race I go to, there are at least 10 people come up to me and say, you know, you are an inspiration, and I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for you. But they say, if he can do it, I can do it. So I'm here.
Thank you for your inspiration, Lou, and for showing what healthy aging is all about.
