Peter Sorgenfrei reflects on an Albert Einstein quote about tying happiness to goals rather than people or possessions. Goals provide lasting satisfaction if you enjoy the journey, while material things offer only short-term pleasure and relationships need to be managed well.

Albert Einstein said, if you want a happy life, tie it to a goal, not to people or things. Maybe that sounds a little bit harsh, that we cannot have ourselves tied up to other people to have a happy life, but I do think it rings somewhat true that if we really want to enjoy this experience, having a goal, whether that's a professional or personal goal, is something that can bring us happiness as we pursue it, if we enjoy the journey, of course. But also, obviously, having other humans in our lives contributes to a happy life, if we can manage those relationships, if we can understand ourselves well enough and how we respond and react to them. The thing that I agree fully with Einstein on is things. Things really don't make you happy. Maybe short-term, but certainly not long-term. If you want a happy life, tie it to a goal, not to things or people.
