Peter Sorgenfrei argues you can't control the world or other people, only your own reactions and choices. He cites Tolstoy and the Stoic philosopher Epictetus to make the case that real change starts with yourself.

Tolstoy said, everyone thinks of changing the world, but nobody thinks of changing themselves. And I think that's so apt, right? The troubles that we experience, we're always focused on somebody else changing, something else changing, a circumstance changing upon which we have no control. As my favorite Stoic said, Epictetus, you only control 2 things. How you relate to your thoughts and your actions. Whatever else is beyond control. Remind yourself of this Tolstoy quote the next time you're wanting to change something outside of yourself and say, well, maybe I can change how I relate to it or how I view the situation, what I do, and not hope for or worry about whether or not somebody else is going to change, because chances are they're not.
