Peter Sorgenfrei maps the mental journey of founder-CEOs through three stages: the exuberance of launch, the resilience of operations, and the anxiety of exit. Whether facing an IPO, acquisition, or shutdown, founders experience a sharp emotional shift from optimism to the weight of real consequences.

This video is about the different mental stages a founder CEO goes through from startup to kind of operations to exit, be that an IPO, be that a sale to another company, or be that an exit because you have to fold. So one person commented on one of my previous videos that it would be interesting to get my perspective on that. So here we go. So essentially, when you start a company or when you start building something, obviously you have a little bit of this exuberant feeling, right? You're like, we're going to go change the world. We're going to build something that's awesome. So there's a lot of positivity and the mental state of most founder CEOs in this early phase is one naturally of excitement, optimism, positivity, I guess. And sort of a sense of we can do whatever we need to do to get this done. And then naturally, as the business matures and you get to a more operational state, the founder CEO becomes more, how do I say, balanced. They may have gotten a couple of scars. Things didn't work out as they planned them to do. And so the mental state changes to one more of resilience or perseverance. Like, we're going to get through this, we're going to get this done. Yes, some things didn't go as we planned, but it's going to be okay. So a more balanced perspective, perhaps. And then fast forward to you're heading towards an exit. And that actually is a mix of both. It's a mix of this is incredibly exciting. We're going to realize an enormous potential. Certainly if you exit for money and you can sort of take that money off the table, some people find that very exciting. Some people find it very exciting that they can go to a bigger ship and do more things as part of an exit. But at the same time, most people are really anxious during this phase because what if the deal falls through? What if we can't deliver on the metrics that we essentially are selling? What if all sorts of things happen? And the other thing about the other kind of exit, which is when you have to fold your company naturally, Your mental state there is, well, pretty much horrible, right? You're realizing that your idea is not going to be successful, that the team didn't work out, that you ran out of money, which is a combination of things. And unfortunately, you have to put your dream to the side or bury it even because you will not be able to continue the way things are. So those are kind of the 3 stages, right? Exuberance, optimism in the beginning, early days, early first couple of years, then a more balanced sort of plateau, if you will. And then either exuberance again with a little bit of anxiousness or a more negative mind space, which can be very challenging and very difficult. So that was a short video on the different mental stages of a CEO and founder in a fast-growing startup. And I hope you liked it. And if you want me to do other videos like this or anything else, Um, just leave a comment and we'll pick it up and I'll record something for you in the future.
