Peter Sorgenfrei offers a simple technique for managing intrusive thoughts: when a task pops into your head at the wrong time, tell yourself "not right now" to compartmentalize it and get back to sleep or work without the anxiety.

A lot of us get overwhelmed, and the simplest thing I've ever discovered to combat that is just to say, not right now. So whenever something comes to mind and you're like, oh, I have to do this thing, that thing, the other thing, I just say, not right now. And then I move on with what it is that I was doing. It also works wonders if you're having trouble sleeping at night and you're lying awake at 3 o'clock and you're thinking about, oh, I have to Remember to do these things. Just saying, not right now, kind of helps your brain compartmentalize it and put it away, and you can go back to doing what you were doing or going back to resting as you should be doing.
