The Number 1 Mistake Founders Make In The Early Days

New founders should spend time on sales, not just product. Reach out to five new people daily through LinkedIn, email, or calls. That's 1,800 contacts a year, which generates more business than most founders expect.

I'm often asked what is the number one thing that new founders, new entrepreneurs need to do better. And I think it's sales. I honestly think it's about making sure that 5 new people know that you exist and what you do every single day. And that might seem like a big number, but when you think of it, you can accomplish that through writing on, say, LinkedIn. You could do that by doing post on Instagram. You can of course do direct emails. You can call folks. You can meet up with coffee networking things. But as long as it's 5 new people— the number 5 is important— every single day, you'll get the word out and reach a bunch of folks. If you do that for a month, it's 150 people. If you do that for a year, it's 1,800 people who will know who you are and know what you do. Some of those people will buy your stuff. So if you're in doubt if you're selling enough, the answer is probably not. And so I'd encourage you to reach out to 5 people now, do the same thing tomorrow and the next day. And if you do that consistently, and if you follow up with them after a while, if they haven't responded, you'll have more business than you know what to do with.
