A CEO should lead like Messi plays soccer: stay still, watch how the game moves, then strike decisively when it matters. Conserve your energy for the moments only you can handle.
Chapters
So everybody knows the soccer player Messi, but what a lot of players— a lot of people don't know about him is he actually doesn't move that much during a game. If you've ever watched him play, he's in Miami at the time of this recording. What he does is he stands around kind of at the middle of the field, out at the side, and he observes where things are going. He observes what the opposing team is doing, what his team is doing, where the ball is going. And then once he's kind of figured it out, then he moves and then he moves quite quickly. And the reason I bring this up as an example is it's a great way to think about being a founder or CEO. It's not about running fast at all times in all directions. It's about understanding how the different pieces are moving. And then when you need to exert the energy, when you need to be on your best game, then you move and then you do what you do best. And I think that's an important lesson for people watching this or listening to this is to say, how can I essentially preserve my energy so that I have the energy I need for that peak performance that only I can do? And that's why I wanted to talk about pacing today.
