This is a YouTube video titled "From notetaker to leader" containing a monologue or talk recorded on September 10, 2024. The speaker discusses the evolving relationship between product managers and engineers, outlining four stages of trust development: note taker, broadcaster, collaborator, and leader. The content focuses on how product managers can grow their role and influence within engineering teams.
But I said, well, listen, your relationship with your engineer is framed or has grown slowly. Trust grows slowly, and in particular for product managers, I think it grows in these four stages. I call it note, note taker, broadcaster, collaborator, leader. So first, you're the note taker. You say, hey, msrms, as an engineer, that's a really great idea. Good job coming up with it. I'll write it down for you so you can just focus on writing the code. At some point, you graduate to broadcaster. You say, not only will I write it down, I'm going to go tell the rest of the team about it. I go tell customers about it. You can just focus on building. At some point, you become collaborator. And the engineer says, hey, we really want to wait and hear what the PM has to say. And the PM says, hey, don't worry. But at the end of that, I'm going to. Look, we're going to do what you want to do and I'm going to go write it down and broadcast it and I'll do it exactly what you want to do.
