Stop trying to measure everything as a PM!

A product manager argues that obsessing over metrics and measuring every step wastes time. Focus instead on customer retention and whether people actually stick around, then iterate from there.
Everybody needs to understand there is a thing called craft. And it is important for you to understand we will only do things if we can measure the impact of it. Yes, but you don't have to measure the impact of it. For every little step you build. Measure the impact when the Taj Mahal is constructed. Don't measure the impact when Minaret is constructed. You can measure cohesively those things, but you don't have to measure every aspect of it to do that because that will kill the craft around there. So incentives are really important to set the right incentives because right incentives lead to right behaviors and at people. Obsession over growth metrics we need to have one North Star metric, guys, so we can all grow towards that. One North Star metric is a bullshit idea. Results in just obsession over micro optimizations. And it results in building a company that is not very holistic from the customer's perspective. They are obsessed about meeting some sort of a metric. We had to rewrite the shit that we wrote. Nothing can scale and nothing can be that beautiful. To get there right, you build what you can with what you have at that point in time to validate and figure out customers. Are you retaining them or not? Are you building the right product? And then you keep changing that technology over time.
