Product managers often waste time writing strategy memos instead of shipping products. The best PMs focus on empathy and ownership, not consultant-style frameworks. Strategy doesn't build great products. Users do.
Like this idea that every product manager should be like kind of an internal like a McKinsey or BCG consultant in a big company. It's a bad idea. Like it's objectively wrong, or you want it to be extremely user focused, have a high degree of empathy for users, take an insane amount of ownership over problems, and then be risk maximizing machines. Right. If you're not careful with if you thought those three things and what PMs become is keepers of strategy, quote unquote. We end up having is actually the worst of both worlds. You end up having very smart people who are incredibly credentialed, spending all their time writing strategy memos whose only job is to increase headcount so they can write more strategy memos. Like instead of shipping products, you ship career plans.
