This is a YouTube video titled "Why design North Stars aren't that useful" containing a monologue or talk recorded on September 5, 2024, discussing the challenges and limitations of using North Star designs in product development, particularly how they often fail to effectively guide engineers, product managers, or leadership due to their futuristic and sometimes impractical nature.
And in product design, there are a lot of times where designers are asked to go design a North Star. The problem is, is that they're not that effective. Right. Typically, once you design it, people look at that and go, that's really cool. And then they just go back to their job, like, they don't really go anywhere. And so I became increasingly disillusioned with these as an effective tool in terms of showing your engineers or your PMs, or even leadership how, hey, here's what we should build. Often designers will go design these things that are like, three to five years in the future. Like, sometimes technologies need to be invented for their design to even exist in the world. And that's really tough for those to become effective because it's like, okay, cool, you designed this thing. Maybe when we invent all these technologies, maybe when our product is more mature, we could build this, but we can't build this right now. So that. That's why engineers and PMs just kind of go back to doing whatever they're doing.
