Phil Risher's home-service company generated $1.5 million in referrals with a simple system: give customers a dedicated landing page, offer a clear incentive like account credit, and track results. Happy customers won't refer without structure.

Happy customers do not automatically just send you referrals. You have to make it easy for them. 9 times out of 10, when I talk to a home service business and I ask them, how do you get customers? They tell me referrals and word of mouth. Then when I ask them, what's the system that you use to get more of them? They have no system. This was exactly what happened at my home service business when I went to work there. We had $1.5 million in referrals that were coming through, and we had a light system on how this worked. The system that you want is, one, you need to educate the end customer about some type of a landing page or referral link that you have that they can send referrals to. The second thing is you have to let them know what's in it for them. Maybe they get some type of credit on their account. Maybe they get an Amazon gift card or something else for referring you. And then the third thing is you have to track it. So that way they have a dedicated landing page or referral link. They have some skin in the game for them, and then they also have some trackability to know what's actually happening. When you have those three things, you create a referral engine in your business that costs you $0 until you actually get customers coming in.
