Phil Risher argues for hiring during slow seasons when qualified candidates are available after layoffs. He says the key is maintaining a constant candidate pipeline and always thinking about where the next lead comes from, so you're not scrambling when you need to fill a role.
I think my competitors are missing out because some of my best hires have come during the, quote, slow season. I sit across the table from people all the time who are like, technically, I have a job, but they laid me off until the spring, basically. And so I hire those people. I might hire them to do nothing for six weeks, but then I have a good hire forever. Spend so much time, like, think about where the next lead's going to come from. We don't really spend any time recruiting. That's been a shift for me. Always be recruiting and always keeping a pipeline. Because here's the thing. Our listeners know it's not easy, and it's even harder when you're in a bind.
