A business owner with all capital tied up in one company has no options if the market drops. Build multiple income streams instead. If you plan to sell in three years, invest capital where it creates the most value by sale day.
If you have money, you have options. If everything is in the business, you're really linked to whatever you can get for that business at whatever time. Whereas if you have these second, third, fourth generators of engines of wealth, obviously you want to sell the business. It's still probably your biggest asset, but you have other stuff there. If the vision for the business is going back to, I want to sell this thing in 3 years, where would putting this money max our value? And then we figure out, well, by how much? And then we compare that to what putting money elsewhere. I think it depends a lot on what their objective is for the business and what, what the timeline looks like.
