A speaker (Phil Risher) explains that they take 40 days off each year—often long backpacking trips—and intentionally builds businesses for lifestyle and autonomy rather than maximum scale. They prefer companies that run without their constant involvement and have built four such companies to enable travel and personal freedom.
I take 40 days off a year. I traditionally did three years in a row where I'd go on 40 day backpack trips through Thailand, through Bali. But I, I love the lifestyle that the business can afford. And I think, like, full stop on this podcast, man, I'm not the entrepreneur that's like, let's grow to 100 million and have a staff of 500. And like, I don't. That doesn't jazz me up. What jazzes me up is build something that works, that runs and runs without Dave. And so that means it's not going to be the biggest business in the world, but it's going to have the best lifestyle. And so that's how I've chosen to build all four companies that I built.
