Phil Risher says business owners who handle every decision, sales call, and customer interaction become the bottleneck. A company stuck at $1 million for two years because the owner was doing estimates instead of strategy. To scale past $1 million, you need to hire salespeople, delegate service delivery, and build repeatable systems.

If everything needs your approval, you're not the owner, you're the bottleneck. If you're still the one doing all the sales, if you're still the one firefighting every single job, if you're the one that has to talk to the customer for them to say yes or no, you are literally stalling your growth. We had a business owner who was stuck at $1 million for 2 years, and he was frustrated because his marketing wasn't growing his business. And every time we talked to him, he was out going on sales calls for big commercial jobs or big residential jobs, and he wouldn't even meet with us on a monthly basis because he was too busy running estimates. If you are the number one salesperson in your business and you're not building a sales system inside of your business, it doesn't matter all the leads in the world that you could get. If you are the bottleneck for growth on your business, you're not going to grow. The hustler has to die and the leader has to be born. The lesson here is that once you cross the million-dollar threshold, you should not be the hustler. You need to start buying back your time. You need to build a sales system inside of your business and hire salespeople so that way you can actually grow the business. You need to buy back your time and not be the one running point on all of your marketing, but work with a company that can help you and be a partner in it. You need to have people that are delivering the service. You need to have people that are answering the phones. And ultimately, you have to be owning the business, not doing the work.
