The REAL Reason Your Business Won't Grow

Phil Risher breaks down why local service businesses stall: owners stay technicians instead of running the business, they skip lead follow-up systems, they chase one-off deals instead of building a brand, their customer experience tanks referrals, and they market wrong. One Garage Door scaled by fixing these.

Video, we're going to look at what not to do and why marketing won't grow your business. So we can look at the inverse and figure out what is actually going to grow your business when you do marketing. This is a great video for any business. And the last one is literally a bomb dropped. People's heads are going to explode when they see this one because it goes against everything that you see on TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram. And I'm going to go through and break it down for. It's going to be crazy. Just make sure that you stay safe for that one as well. All right, so the first thing, why won't marketing grow your business? Number one, if you're a technician, if you're in technician, it's going to be very hard to scale your business through marketing. Once you get past $100,000 in revenue and you're just on a job, what marketing is not going to do is not going to allow you to be a better technician. The reason that I put this one here is because a lot of times you run into business owners that really just own a job. They're not entrepreneurs, they're not business owners, they're just technicians. And so the first thing that you want to make sure that you're doing is if you're spending money on marketing, that you are really thinking big about this and not just focus on getting another job or focus on being another technician, but really focus on how are you going to scale the business. Now, if you are a technician and you're looking to do marketing to grow your business and scale out of being a technician, that's one way to look at this. But the most important thing is that you are not a technician. You're not a plumber, you own a plumbing company. You, you're not an H Vac technician, you own an H Vac company, start thinking about that way. And that's really what you want to do when you think about your marketing is how is this going to scale my business, not scale my job, or the number of jobs that I have as a technician. Very, very important. Because a lot of times we run into people that are great technicians. They don't know how to run a business and they start doing marketing and they're not focusing on lead capture and all that stuff. They're really just fighting transactionally. Which leads to. The second thing is, if you're a technician, it's going to be really hard to manage your leads. And we see this all the time. People are just paying for leads. I Want more leads, I want more leads. I want more leads. I don't care if I have too many leads. But what happens is, is that if you have a bad process for managing leads. For example, you're a technician, you're on a job, someone calls you, you don't answer, you missed out on that. Lead marketing won't help you grow your business because you're stuck doing jobs and people just think, oh, I'm going to pay. And then, you know, it's the plate spinning. This plate is spinning over here because I'm doing all this work and then this plate is spinning over here and, and I'm trying to get these jobs but they can't spin at the same time. And so then what happens? Your business doesn't grow and marketing doesn't work for you and you get frustrated. So if you do not have a process to manage your leads, it's going to be very hard to grow your business through marketing because you're going to get leads and you're not going to be able to capitalize on those leads or work them. You know, you also get a lead ins, you call them and they don't answer. Well, does it just go into a pile? You have to have a process to follow up on them. So that's the second thing. The third one, if you're only focused on transactional leads and not building a brand, this one we see all the time. And most large companies, they got large because they built a solid brand, not because they did transactional leads. And I'll give you a great example of this. We work with a company that was purchased by a private equity firm. They are greater than $5 million in revenue. They were spending literally like $3,000 on ad spend because they built such a solid brand in their marketplace. And we made videos about how to do branding versus transactional marketing. It takes both of them. But really focusing on transactional leads is a way that marketing is not going to work for you. So this PE firm, they, they were at 3,000 some dollars for their ad spend and they said, all right, let's pump all this money in and start pulling all these levers and really ramp up all this ad spend. So they went from 3,000 up to about $20,000 over a six month span. And guess what? Their leads went down actually. And the reason is, is because transactional leads, though you may say, oh, this doesn't work. This, this work they work with, I mean they work with these large marketing companies. Like we're a consulting arm underneath of a Large marketing company that they work with, like huge. And it didn't work because transactional leads are one, they always are looking for price for the most part. Second is if you don't have a process to manage your leads, the leads are coming in and they're flowing out. Like an example of this is like someone calls and says, how much does it cost to get such and such done? And they say, okay, I'm going to talk to my spouse. And then they the lead's gone. If you don't capture the lead and work the lead, it's gone. So from a branding perspective, how can you focus on brand and how's this going to actually help you grow your business? By getting Google reviews, by building a solid brand out in the marketplace. This is going to go a lot further than just paying for more transactional leads and more ad platforms. Fourth, we're getting to that fifth one, which, the fifth one is pretty heavy hitter and I'm going to show you some, some cool stuff about that. All right. The fourth one, this one is very hard. We see this all the time. When you do not focus on your customer experience and you're just trying to get more leads in the door. What happens is that if you don't focus on customer experience, it's really hard to market a bad business. It's really hard to market terrible customer service. And terrible customer service lingers. You don't get referrals. You don't get people saying like, hey, you know, you got to work with this company. Referrals are the easiest to close. Referrals don't care about the price because they already got referred in. Also, if you just do a lackadaisical job, you're not going to get reviews. People are going to leave you lousy reviews. They're not going to be explaining the service or talking about it. They might say, yeah, just click five stars and leave review. That's not, it's a good review, but it's not going to move the needle from building a solid brand. And so what I would stress is if you want to focus on marketing is look at your customer experience and how can you make it amazing? How can you create raving fans for your customer and make sure that your company is the one that everyone is talking about when it comes to whatever service that you offer. So let's just review these, then I'm going to get to the fifth one. So if you're stuck being a technician, very, very hard. If you got to start thinking as a business owner, as an Entrepreneur, how are you going to grow your business? You do not have a process to manage leads. So you start getting leads in, but you call them, they don't answer, and then you're gone with it and you're back on the job site and you can't work your leads. You got to have a process for managing leads. There's, we made videos about this before, but you got to come up with a process to manage your leads. And number three, focus on transactional leads and not building a brand. You're just focused on paying the next ad platform, thumbtack, whatever it is, and you're just trying to get leads in the door and you're not actually building a brand. Number four, you're not creating a great customer experience. You're not creating raving fans. You're just going out and doing the work and you're not actually delivering a five star service. All right? And number five, this one's going to rattle some cages. But just hear me out on this one is you're literally doing the wrong type of marketing and you're not focused on local business. And here's why. Tommy mello, he runs a one garage door. A one garage door is a literally $250 million business all started by this guy right here. And he started the business in like 2007 or something like that, and he scaled it to $250 million. And he has a book, the Home Service Millionaire. You should read that book. Every single person I hear, they want to run Facebook ads. Facebook ads. Facebook ads. So just look at this. This is a One Garage Door service. This is their Facebook profile. You can see the ads that they're running. You can go and see the ads that they're running. And look what this says. This page is not currently running any ads. And we can go to their Facebook ads library. And they're running zero ads. This is a $250 million business. You don't think that they figured out how to do marketing and they're focused on the wrong type of marketing. They're not doing local marketing. They're. They're focused. Businesses are focused on the wrong things. They need to be focused on doing local marketing. What does that mean? Building a style, local brand, doing all the right stuff when it comes to getting Google reviews. Doing all the right stuff when it comes to building a great experience for your customer.
