A short YouTube video by Amber Hollingsworth that lists three observable outward signs suggesting a loved one may have an addiction: (1) lying about substance/behavior use, (2) repeatedly making and breaking promises to change, and (3) avoiding or refusing to discuss the issue. The speaker notes these are lay observations rather than official clinical diagnostic criteria and points viewers to a follow-up video for formal criteria and scoring.

Am I really dealing with someone who has an addiction? Or maybe I'm just overreacting. It can be kind of difficult to decide. Is it really addiction or is it something else? So I want to give you three symptoms that if you see these consistently, this is a big hint or clue that it's probably addiction. Does the person lie about the substance or behavior or whatever this thing is that they're doing that you think might be addictive? They're constantly making promises to do better, and. And then eventually they break those promises. And the last big sign that I want you to look out for is people who have addictions will do almost anything to avoid discussing it. They pretty much refuse to talk about it. Now, of course, those aren't official clinical criteria for addiction. These are things that you're going to notice from the outside looking in. If you want to know what the real clinical criteria are, I want you to watch this video next. I go through all of the clinical criteria, and I tell you how to sort of add them up and score them and decide.
