Addiction thrives in the darkness. And the only way to cure addiction is to live in the light. Now, those of you who watch my videos, you've probably heard me say that lots of times. And recently, one of our viewers, Bonnie, asked me to make a video specifically on this. She asked me to make a video on what does it mean not to live in the light? Which, of course, is a great question. And in this video, I'm going to break it down for you. For those of you who are new here, welcome to put the shovel down. I'm Amber Hollingsworth, and this YouTube channel is all about helping you get your life and your family back from addiction. And this is the only channel out there that helps you understand addiction from every angle. Whether you're the person who has the addiction or the family member, this channel is going to give you what you need in order to beat addiction for good and get back to living the life that you want to live. Now, let's get into our topic. If you think of addiction like a bacteria, like you were going to grow a bacteria in science class, and you were thinking about what are the conditions necessary for bacteria to grow? Right. Bacteria loves moisture and darkness and warmth, all that kind of stuff. Well, what creates the right conditions for addiction? Well, living in darkness creates the perfect conditions for addiction to grow and thrive and take over not just your life, but the life of everyone around you. So what does that mean, living in the darkness? It means that you're carrying around a lot of shame and guilt and remorse and regret. It probably means that you've got some broken relationships out there that you're not dealing with. And it may even mean that you've got some old trauma in your past that you're not dealing with. Living in the darkness means you're probably running from broken promises or debts that you owe or that you're holding on to old resentments against people. As you can see, all of those things are about keeping things on the inside, Blocking things, shielding things, keeping it all dark and in here in this trap. And what happens when you have all that in there? It's like a toxicity that becomes an infection in your body that addiction lives off of. If you turn the light on addiction, it literally can't live anymore. Think of it like a vampire going out into the sunshine. Like, it'll just scream, go ah. And wither up and die, telling you, turn the light on addiction. So now let's take a look at what living in the light looks like. It means you tell the truth even when it's really hard. It means that you take care of your relationships, that you keep your promises, and that you make amends or fix some of the bad stuff that you've done so that it's not following you around, haunting you anymore, causing you to feel shameful and guilty. You gotta get rid of that stuff. It means that you deal with your resentments and you actively work toward trying to have a change of heart, trying to change the way you feel about the people around you and yourself and the whole world in general. Basically, if I could wrap it all up into one statement, I would tell you that living in the light means becoming the kind of person that you're proud of, that you like. When you're living in the light, you are going to like you. You're going to feel good about yourself. And guess what? When that happens, there's a lot less need for drugs, alcohol, or any other addiction for that matter. Now, there's an old AA saying, in fact, it's one of what they call the promises. It's the third promise that says we do not regret the past, nor wish to shut the door on it. And that really speaks to the need to deal with all that bad stuff that you're trying to keep in that container that's keeping you sick. You got to figure out how to dig it out of there, deal with it, and move forward. Now, maybe that means you do that with a sponsor. Maybe that means you do that with a counselor. Maybe that means you do that at your church with your preacher. Maybe it means you do that with your best friend or whatever. But you have got to dig it all out of there and deal with it. Think of it like pulling a splinter out of the bottom of your foot so your foot can heal. Now, for those of you who are actively working on how to live in the light, I've created a list of daily questions that you need to ask yourself to make sure you're in the light and and on track so that you can live the life that you want to live. I'll put the link to that in the description below. Now, up next is more about the dark psychology of addiction. All of those dark thoughts that are inside that can keep us sick. I'm going to put it right up here. All you have to do is click on it.
