A lot of therapists believe that it's the low self esteem that leads people to having an addiction. And I guess in some cases that could be true. But what I see more frequently is that it is the addiction that leads to a sense of low self esteem. And that sense of low self esteem, low competence, low self worth, leads us into a victim type of a thinking. And believe it or not, that victim type of thinking leads us into justifying our own selfish behaviors, selfish decisions, and then we end up hurting the people around us.
