Amber Hollingsworth advises on whether it's appropriate to drink in front of an alcoholic loved one. She says the answer depends on the loved one’s stage of change, cautions that suddenly stopping drinking in their presence can be perceived as judgmental, and recommends not binge-drinking or actively encouraging their drinking — otherwise drinking in front of them can be acceptable.

Is it okay to drink in front of my alcoholic loved one? And the answer to that depends on where they're at in their stages of change. I don't think modifying your own drinking around someone who is actively drinking is all that helpful. If you normally drink in front of them and then you stop drinking in front of them, you're gonna see that like as a dig or as a comment. Even though you're not saying anything, they're gonna get the hint that you're putting this judgment on them, which going to come across not so great with. You don't want to like binge drinking and going crazy and like encouraging it, making their drinking worse. As long as you're not doing that, that's perfectly fine.
