Amber Hollingsworth (Recovery Concepts #18) guides viewers in early sobriety toward personal development by recommending they identify someone they admire and adopt that person’s qualities. She suggests two practical strategies: spend more time physically around that person so habits and attitudes rub off, or (if direct access isn’t possible) study the person’s values and behaviors from afar and deliberately think, feel, and act like them.

Alright, today I want you to think about someone that you really look up to and you admire. And in 12 steps they say they have something that you want, like emotionally, spiritually, psychologically, like that. You just feel like this person, they just have it together. Like they got their life together, they know what they're doing, they got their head on straight about things. Now, as you identify who that person is, I want you to think about what it is about that person that you really look up to, that you really admire. What is that quality that they have that you want to have? And there's a couple of things you can do about it. You can try to be around that person more, because just being around that person more will actually help you to be more like it. Hopefully you've already watched the video where we talked about that. Your thinking, feeling and behavior is basically the average of the five people that you keep closest to you and that you're around the most. So if you put yourself physically around that person more, then you're naturally going to think and feel more like that person. It's just going to rub off on you like a magnetic force. So that's one thing you can do. But maybe you don't actually have access to that person or you don't. Maybe this person isn't even like alive. Maybe they're like somebody from history or a grandparent you had that passed away or something. You can still do a little studying on what that quality is, how they interacted with the world, what their values were. So you can even study it from afar and you can start to think, feel and behave like that person and eventually you'll get that quality that they have that you really want.
