You've cut back, you've taken breaks, you've switched from liquor to beer or from drinking every day to only drinking on the weekends, or you've told yourself you won't use alone, or you won't drink before a certain time, or you'll only have 2 that you'll definitely not use during the week. You'll be careful this time, right? All these promises. And yes, maybe those rules work for a little while. And then the amount creeps back up. The exceptions start. The stressful week happens. The vacation happens. The rules get adjusted. And eventually everything goes right back to ship. If every new rule eventually falls apart, the problem may not be that you haven't found the right rule yet, right? It's not a matter of finding the right loophole. Readiness starts when you stop asking, how do I control this better? And you start asking, what if all these attempts to control it have already given me my answer?
