Amber Hollingsworth explains that intuition is a quiet, brief inner knowing—"a whisper"—that is easy to miss. She argues fear can be so loud it drowns out these subtle signals, and connects this to people in active addiction who are frequently in fight/flight or intoxicated states and therefore unable to access their inner wisdom.

Intuition is like a softer, quiet knowing. It's almost like a whisper. It's one little thing that crosses your mind really quickly. And it's so easy to ignore those little quiet thoughts that just sneak in there real fast. You don't even know why it came to you. Those are the ones that are usually trying to communicate something super duper important. But a lot of times, the volume on our fear part of our brain is turned up so loud, we can't hear that. This is the reason why people that are in active addiction really don't have intuition. They don't have that ability, ability to stop, slow down, and listen to their self on a deep level and tap into that inner wisdom. And knowing they don't have that ability because they're always in some kind of activated fight flight, totally high, totally drunk state.
