In this YouTube video, Amber Hollingsworth reads an email from a longtime subscriber who lives alongside a loved one struggling with addiction. The subscriber, wishing to remain anonymous, shares two self‑written songs that capture his experience: “The Girl I Married,” which details the pain, damage, and daily battle of caring for an addicted partner, and “Still Got That Light,” which holds onto a thread of hope. Amber plays the songs (over B‑roll) and reacts positively, praising the songwriting and production. She then invites viewers to comment on which song resonated most and which lyric struck them, encouraging community feedback for the artist. The video blends personal testimony, raw lyrical content, and a call for audience engagement around themes of addiction, caregiver fatigue, and lingering hope.

Just recently I got this email from one of our subscribers. So here's the email. Hi Amber, I followed your Put the Shovel Down channel for the past few years and it helped me more than you probably realize. As someone who's been living alongside a loved one with an addiction, your videos have been a steady source of clarity, strength, and understanding. You've helped me feel less alone in the mess of it, and that's no small thing. Recently I tried to put Some of what I've been feeling into music. I'm not a songwriter. This was more about survival than art. What came out were 2 songs. One of them is about pain and damage. It's called The Girl I Married. And the other one is about the hope that I still have. It's called Still Got That Light. Together, they helped me put into words what I haven't been able to articulate. I think they turned out well, and I wanted to share them with you in case they resonate with you personally or maybe with someone in your audience. You have my full blessing to share them if you feel like they might help someone else. I only ask to remain anonymous if you do. Okay, so when I got this email, I gotta be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect when I opened these songs up to listen, but I gotta admit, I loved them. These songs were beautifully written, beautifully produced, and I really want to share them with you because I know they're gonna speak to you as much as they did to me. When I got these songs, they were just in an MP3 form, which means it's just the music, but I had my editor put some B-roll over the top so I could release it and share it with you.
In a video format, you look me in the eye and swear it's through. But I've seen this before, and I know the cue: liquor in your purse, liquor in the drawer. Another promise made just like before. You say be honest, then twist my words. Make me feel like I'm unheard. You detox crashed and come back. Fight through. Every round feels like déjà vu. You're not the girl I married. She's gone, she's ghosted, drowned in a bottle, bitter and toasted. I love you still, but I don't know how. I swore I'd stay, but what's left here now? The kids grew up watching you fade. I patched the holes, cleaned the mess you made. Told them I'm sick and swallow the shame. But your promises rot and I wear the blame. You're not the girl I married. You mastered the game. Though rehab lies in circle and blame. I hold the line, but you cross it somehow. I love you still, but But I don't know how. You detox like it's Tuesday chores, white-knuckle a week, then open the door to the same damn storm that never ends, and I play the fool again and again. You stash the truth behind closed doors like I ain't checked those spots before. Say nothing's wrong with glassy eyes, but hiding's just a quiet lie. You're not the girl I married, but you wear her face. Hold me hostage in our sacred place. You're not the girl I married, but you wear her face. Hold me hostage in our sacred place. I stay 'cause I'm meant for better or worse. But loving you now just feels like a curse. I don't wanna leave, but I can't stand still. You forgot how to love me, and I'm forgetting how to feel. I'm sorry. But loving you now just feels like a curse. I don't want to leave, but I can't stand still. You forgot how to love me, and I'm forgetting how to feel. I see the girl who used to dance. Before the bottle took your chance. Before the pain you never named lit the fuse and fed the flame. You say you're broken past repair, but you're still breathing, you're still there. You look at me like I'm the wall, but I'm the one who caught your fall. You still got that light, though it's buried deep. Deep under the lies and the secrets you keep. I'm tired as hell, but I won't let go. You still got that fire, I still see it glow. I hate the fights, the glassy stare, the silence. Yeah, you always did. Even if you don't believe it lives, I'm here for truth, not just the show. So if you wanna climb, I won't let you go.
Yeah, you always did. Even if you don't believe it lives, I'm here for truth, not just the show. So if you wanna climb, I won't let you go.
Here.
