If you really want to break free from those codependency cycles, you're going to have to address the root of the matter. I know that word can be a little fuzzy or gray. When I'm talking about codependency, it's when you're sort of continually overly sacrificing your own needs to help someone else's issue, fix their problems. Basically, it's like an over-self-sacrifice, and that can apply to anyone and everyone. And sometimes that is even the root of someone's addictive behavior, is that they don't know how to get their needs met. In a more productive way, and they tend to overdo or overhelp for other people.
