Amber Hollingsworth tells families of people with addiction to prioritize their own healing and self-care. She argues this protects you from permanent harm and resentment, whether or not your loved one recovers.
Chapters
In the end, if you can learn all these things and change your heart, no matter what happens to your addicted loved one, you will come out a better person and you will like yourself better and you will be happier in your own life. If you don't do this, their addiction can destroy you. Like I've seen a lot of family members be destroyed by someone else's addiction and that person gets clean and sober, moves on and has a good life. But the trauma that it causes the family doesn't heal and that destruction can stay in place. All these things I'm telling you, I usually tell it to you because I say this is what you needed do to help them, but it's also what you need to do to help you. And you need to do it regardless, because otherwise you turn into that other person that we talk about, that person that you don't like that's resentful and hurt.
