The thing of it is not every lie comes from the same place. Sometimes the person is just avoiding the consequences or just preserving or protecting the addiction. Sometimes the denial will come out automatically because the truth feels threatening. I've literally had people tell me, they're like, if I get asked, have I been drinking or have I been using, I will automatically lie no matter what. It's like a reflex. It's so obvious to both of you, but yet they hang on. To saying, no, I didn't. It really can be almost like a reflex because the truth really does feel threatening. Okay, first off, the lie protects them from the next conversation, the one where they have to admit what's happening and they know what's coming. How much did you drink? Why did you lie? What are you going to do about all this? Are you willing to get help now? Because saying no delays that entire chain of events.
