Amber Hollingsworth explains that addiction affects entire family systems, using a clock-and-cogs metaphor to show interconnected impacts; she advises starting with empathy for others' opinions, fears, and strategies rather than trying to force them to see your point.

Families are systems. I like to think of them like when you look at the insides of a clock and you have all the little wheels that connect to all the other little wheels. There's no way to take a person in that system and let them start falling apart the way addiction makes you fall apart. And it not affect all the other cogs in the system, it just affects them differently. So if you're in this kind of situation and you're trying to get on the same page, the first place to start is to have empathy for the other people's opinions and fears and concerns and strategies for what's going on. You have to stop fighting with the other people, trying to get them to see it your way.
