Girl, listen, I love using humor and jokes as much as the next person in the conversation, but we have to be careful with how often we're using self deprecating humor in order to connect. When you are always making yourself the butt of the joke or making jokes at your expense, you are likely undermining your credibility. You are telling people what you think about yourself and what they should think about you. So if you tend to do this, you tend to be overly self deprecating. I have a quick exercise for you to help you reel it in. First, give yourself a two self deprecating joke limit. I don't care how long the conversation is, you could be talking to someone for 20 minutes or two hours, but two jokes is the maximum you get to make it your expense. Once you're past that number, you need to move on and find other material in order to keep your humor going. And I have a little bonus to take this up a notch and hold ourselves accountable just a little bit more. Picture someone listening to you that you admire and you want to impress. So think a manager, a teacher, a professor, a coach, a parent, a relative. Would you want that person, the one you want to see? The most ideal version of you here, hearing the jokes you're gonna make about yourself. Literally picture them there in front of you. How they talk, how they look, their facial expressions, how they would react if they heard you making jokes like this about yourself. Would they be laughing along or would they be surprised and maybe even a little disappointed? So if this is an area you find yourself struggling, try this exercise and let me know how it goes. You got this?
