Eileen Gu responds to a reporter asking if her two silver medals should be seen as "two golds lost." She calls the premise ridiculous, points out she's the most decorated female freeskier, and frames each medal as life-changing. A commentator breaks down why her answer worked: she laughed off the absurdity, backed it with facts, and stayed composed.
Do you see these as two silvers gained or two golds lost?
I'm the most decorated female free skier in history. I think that's an answer in and of itself. How do I say this? Winning a medal at the Olympics is a life changing experience for every athlete. Doing it five times is exponentially harder because every medal is equally hard for me. But everybody else's expectations rise, right? And so the two medals lost situation, to be quite frank with you, I think is kind of a ridiculous perspective to take. I'm showcasing my best skiing. I'm doing things that quite literally have never been done before. And so I think that is more than good enough. But thank you.
Oh, we have all seen this play out before, haven't we? A woman is doing well in whatever field or industry she's in, and someone feels like it's appropriate to knock her down a peg or bring something up that minimizes or negates her accomplishment. Absolutely loved Eileen Gu's response here. And I'm going to break down three reasons why. Number one, that laugh. It told us everything we needed to know and flipped the ridiculousness of the question back on to the reporter. She didn't internalize a single thing. Then she went into some stats and facts, explained why she's one of the best athletes in her field and proudly owned her accomplishments. Instead of shying away from them. She advocated for herself during a moment that truly counted and reminded both the reporter and everybody else who she was. And finally, she underscored the effort that goes into this level of sportsmanship and athleticism and why it's important to look at that when thinking about the number of medals and the types of medals that an athlete gets while staying eloquent, cool, calm and collected on a grand stage. I love it. This was such a win for her and for women everywhere, no matter what industry or field they're in. Response was on point. You go, girl.
