A short coaching video by Raele Altano (Well with Raele) offering concrete phrases and tactics for saying no kindly and confidently. The speaker lists example refusals (e.g., “Thank you so much for the invite. I won't be able to make it,” “That's not going to work for me, but I really appreciate you thinking of me,” “I wish I could help, but I have a lot on my plate…”) and explains the underlying tactics: replace apologies with gratitude, offer alternatives when appropriate, and avoid unnecessary explanations. The guidance is framed for safe/friendly situations.

Here are a few ways to confidently yet kindly say no, along with a quick breakdown of why these phrases can work. And for reference, I'm well with Raelle, your communication coach, here to help you socialize and articulate with kindness, class and confidence. To preface this, these tips are Assuming the situation is safe, friendly, and warrants kindness thank you so much for the invite. I won't be able to make it, but I hope you have a great time. That's not going to work for me, but I really appreciate you thinking of me. I wish I could help, but I have a lot on my plate at the moment. They also offer an alternative when appropriate, which is a great way to meet someone halfway, especially when you're saying no to them. And finally, none of them require an explanation for why you're saying no. We tend to think that we always owe an explanation when saying no or have to justify our no, and that's simply not the case. Depends on the situation, of course, but most of the time we don't have to explain ourselves and can craft a good way to say no using some of these tactics. I hope this was helpful and make saying no seem less daunting for you.
