People underestimate how their immediate environment can be such a good conversation, starter topic or small talk topic, especially when meeting other new people. It is the common denominator of why you and the other party are where you are, so why not take advantage of it? And I'm not talking about the very overused do you come here often? I'm talking about questions like how was your drive or commute here? Did you come here alone or with friends or co workers? Is this your first time at an event like this? How do you know the host? What do you think of the space and and so on and so forth? Your environment or how you got to that environment is a great place to pull inspiration and get the conversation going. It's light hearted, it's easy, everyone can speak to it, and I can almost guarantee that the other party will be grateful that you brought something up to initiate the conversation. Making small talk and conversing with people you don't really know doesn't come naturally to everyone, but it doesn't need to be this overly scary, awkward, daunting thing either. You can group certain questions or prompts into larger categories that are easy to speak to and watch the conversation unfold from there. I'll do more of these and share some more easy topic ideas, but for now I hope this is helpful.
