Here are four ways to tell if someone is projecting based on how they communicate. For reference, I'm well with Rael, your communication coach here to help you socialize and articulate with kindness, class and confidence. What even is projection? Again, let's recap. Projecting is when you unconsciously associate your own thoughts, feelings, fears, beliefs and other behaviors onto somebody else and their actions. For example, you were cheated on in a past relationship, so you accuse your current boyfriend or girlfriend of cheating because you carry that insecurity and into a new relationship and project onto them. So how does this actually manifest in communication? Let's unpack. The first indicator is a highly emotional or lengthy response to something that seems pretty mundane or has nothing to do with that person. Let's say you try a new restaurant, you love it, you tell the other person about it, and they respond with a very emotional response as to why the food there isn't good and why you should never go to that restaurant. Again, that's projecting. Second indicator is a dissonance between what they're saying and their actual beliefs or behaviors. Someone who lies may constantly accuse other people of lying. Third indicator is their obsession with comparing in a conversation. The chances are they're going to bring themselves up often and justify why they do what they do or explain themselves when they never really needed to. The fourth indicator is that their positivity is conditional. For example, their compliments towards you only go as far as how good they're feeling about themselves and their lives in that very moment. I hope this breakdown was useful and helps you identify what projecting looks like in your conversations and relationships so you know how to operate moving forward.
