This is a short TV interview transcript (YouTube clip) featuring certified communication coach Raele Altano on Fox 5 NY's 'Good Night New York.' The hosts and Raele discuss the importance of assertive communication and boundary-setting—particularly for women—offering practical tips and short scripts (e.g., redirecting with a question, polite social exits, avoiding habitual lying). All right.
Communication is key. Crystal. We obviously, like, we already know this, huh?
TB and J. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Come on. We're stupid with it.
You got it.
But whether you're at work, you have friends or family, communication is key. And sometimes we need a little help finding the right way to say things or how to say it.
You know, that's never happened to me. Never ever.
Huh?
That's a joke.
You're never at a loss for words.
That's a joke. Ha ha. Okay. So joining us to offer some tips and tools to become more assertive in our communication. You know, it is the new year and we have to get on it. We are talk about certified communication coach Rael Altano. Raelle, welcome to Goodnight New York.
Thank you. Thank you both for having me.
Yes, of course. So why did you feel like this was an important topic? I feel like a lot of people, they want to say no. They don't know how. They want to be direct. They don't know how.
So help us. Yes, yes. Well, I've always loved connecting with people and have always been drawn to the art of talking and communicating. And I feel like sometimes, especially with women, we, we get stuck in this perpetual nice girl role and we want to people please. We want to be empathetic and understanding and we can be when also or while also drawing a boundary. Right. And saying, hey, this is great, but it's not going to work for me or whatever it is you like to say. So I wanted to find that balance and sweet spot and help others with doing that too.
How are you able to do that specifically for women? Because you say it is so important. So what are the specific things? Like somebody picks up the phone and calls you and say, what should I do in this situation? Is it a course? Do you just chat on the phone a little bit? How do you break it down for clients?
Sure, sure. I do it in one on one coaching containers and I'm also starting to do it with some corporate trainings as well.
So you almost have like, say if you ask us a question, we respond in X way or in y z way. You have two possible responses. So you kind of have it already pre planned.
Right? A little bit. And so with each client there are some scripts, some strategies and obviously then it's up to the client or to the team organization to apply it to their own setting.
Right.
Context matters so much. So you apply it to your own environment and tweak the tools and tips to fit.
You gotta make it work for you.
Definitely.
Do you ever advocate Lying. Is it ever like a time to just go, hi, can you help me move this weekend? I am going away. I'll be busy this year in my brain. From Queens to Brooklyn. Do you ever just go, just come up with a good quick lie?
So it depends. It depends. Yeah, hypothetically, sometimes. Okay, so for things like that, I wouldn't want someone to lie because then you have to remember it and it's more mental work to remember like, well, what did I say then? Like, do I post or whatnot? But if, let's say someone is really talking your ear off at a party and you need to get out of that, you could say, hey, you know what, I have to make a quick call or I need to take a look at my phone. I need to check to see if my kids teach someone. Yeah, that's it.
I'm about to set myself on fire and I have three minutes left to live and I have to spread the loss.
I gotta go.
Right?
Yeah.
The shrimp cocktail is calling my name. Right? I'm out. Yes, that's one way to do it. Or you know what, I do and maybe this is a tip. So if someone asks me something like, you know, what are you doing this weekend? Right. So now it's open ended. You don't know if they're gonna say, can you help me move? Or you know, can you come to a party? So I always go, well, why, what do you have going on? So I ask first and then it allows me to tailor the answer to like, you know, I'm busy because you need me to do some heavy lifting I don't want to do. Well, I'm available.
Crystal, Are you available this weekend?
Well, what did you have?
Just tax preparation. Yeah, just something.
No, you're not very unavailable.
Asking a question back is great. It kind of redirects it a little bit.
There you go.
You do a little redirect and you say, well, what's going on? Yeah, why, what's up?
Yeah, yeah, there we are.
Some great tips, Rael, we appreciate. Where can people find you online?
Sure, sure, sure. Well, with Raelle is my handle for everything. Well, with Rael, coaching is my business. I have my website where people can get more on my services.
And you're a Jersey girl.
I am. Thank you so much. Thanks for having me.
