Dean (also calling himself Randy Dean / Email Sanity Expert/Guy). He demonstrates a Gmail setting under General that auto-adds people to contacts when you send or reply to them, explains why it’s useful, shows how to manually add contacts from the inbox, and points viewers to his website (randalldean.com) and email for additional resources and PDFs.

Hi everybody, Randall F. Dean, Email Sanity Expert here. Hey, um, I just recently did a video about how you should look in Gmail's settings to see if they've added any new features, and, and in that video I covered 3, uh, settings that I think you might want to take a look at. I'll link that video to the end of this video, but there was one more setting in there that you can turn on that I just thought was super clever. So I wanted to do a specific video just for that. So let's pop out into my Gmail. And when you go into Gmail, remember to get into settings, you just come up here to the gear in the upper right corner. And then what you're gonna do once you click on the gear is bypass quick settings by say, see all settings. All right, so this will take you into the settings, categories that you have options to. And this one in particular is under the General tab. And if you page down, keep going, it's, it's quite a ways down into the settings. Keep going, it's a little further. It's right here, right above Signatures. Create contacts for autocomplete. And what I love this is, take a look at what they've done here. This is just so clever. 'When I send a message to a new person, add them to other contacts so that I can autocomplete them next time.' Now think about what they're doing here. It's really slick. You're only gonna auto-add them to contacts if you send them a message, including a reply. It's not gonna add everybody who's emailing you because that would include all the people with all the junk and spam. It's only the ones that you're either sending a direct message to or you are replying to. That's who gets automatically added into your contacts. I think that's clever as heck. And so I turned that one on. And now as a reminder though, if you want to add somebody to contacts right out of your inbox, I've covered this in another video too, you usually just hover. And if you hover, let's see if it's going to do it this time. Yep, there it goes. What it'll do is if they're already in there, let's do that again. If they're already in your database, you'll get a pen If not, you'll get a little icon here, which is like the image of a person with a little plus, and that basically allows you to add them to contacts or update their contact info if you'd like. So, um, you know, a couple quick little things there that you might find super useful, but I just thought that setting was so cool I wanted to do, uh, my own little video on that one. All right, so with that, why don't we go ahead and finish this one up? I'd like to thank you for your time. Once again, I'm Randy Dean, Email Sanity Guy. If you'd like to learn a little bit more about me and my for both Outlook and Google users, go take a look at my website, randalldean.com, and I do have a whole series of bonus PDFs on time management, email management, and one of them is actually a guide to this YouTube channel, which gives you links to more than 100 of my past email and other tip videos. So if you wanna get good at that, just send me an email, randy@randalldean.com, and put YouTube PDF in the subject line. With that, I'm gonna sign off on this one. Thanks everybody, bye now.
