1 in 5 Pro Players will play 1 day in the MLB

Alex Swenson, a former Division I coach, breaks down the odds: only 0.5% of high school seniors get drafted, and of first-round picks, 70% play just one MLB game. He argues athletes need a backup plan because most won't make it past the minors.

Hey, team. Alex here. Thanks for joining me. Today's episode, we're going to be talking about the numbers, the data, the statistics of making it to the big leagues, making it to the mlb. As you are probably aware, it's very hard to get to the pinnacle of any sport, whether it's baseball, whether it's football, basketball, soccer, whatever it may be. But I would argue the MLB baseball player, it is the hardest sport to get the to the very top. And I will explain why here in a minute. But if you're new to my channel, my name is Alex Swenson. I'm A former Division 1 college baseball coach, scout and recruiter with 11 years of experience. And now what I do is help high school baseball players and the parents navigate the college recruiting process to help them find the best home for them in college, help guys get into college. I've helped guys go on into professional baseball. And if you are looking for help, I'm actually investing in this. Next week I'm opening it up and I have five spots. So I'm looking for five high school baseball players and their parents that are looking for help might be super busy and they're looking just to streamline this recruiting process, make this faster and just putting their son in the best possible position to play at the next level. That is what I do. I've helped hundreds of guys play at the next level. So if you're interested in that, please go to my website down below. You'll see it right down here on the screen. Premierathletes co. Or you can schedule a call with me down in the description there as well if you're looking for more help. So let's dive into these numbers here. So 0.5% of high school seniors will be drafted. So we're not even to a percent. All right? So I love the aspirations. I want you guys to dream big, right? Have big dreams. It's really important to have big dreams. It was a dream of mine to, to play at the Division 1 level and I was a fringe guy. I could have been possibly D2, maybe D3, but I could have been a Division 1 guy and I made it. So playing at the Division 1 level was a dream for me and I made it. And it was an amazing career. Meaning not just like the plane of it, but everything that I got for being a student athlete and then everything it gave me, even after that as well. So very difficult to be drafted out of high school. So I tell guys, hey, man, focus on, hey, getting better skill development and looking for Schools that fit you overall from a athletic standpoint, obviously education standpoint, geographically, financially, all of those things. And that's really what I help with because it's just such a small percentage of the guy that's going to get drafted out of high school, then even that we make it to college. So let's take a look at that. 10.5% of college baseball players. Okay. And most of those are the division ones are definitely guys get drafted, D2 and D3, but division one mainly are guys that get drafted and about 90% of them do not get drafted into play at the next level. All right, so very difficult there as well. Let's take a look at some other numbers. First round picks. All right, so if you're a first round pick, I actually played with a guy that was a first round pick. Unbelievable. You know, you have about a 70% chance of playing just one day, one day in the big league. Stepping foot on a field of the big leagues, you have a 70% chance. Even that's kind of crazy. Like some might think that's high, but I think that's pretty low. Like you're a first rounder. It's almost like, hey, dead sealed. Especially at other sports, like you're going right to the big leagues. Baseball is not that. You have to go through a minor league system. This is why, in my opinion, the MLB making it to the MLB is the hardest sport to get to the pinnacle of that sport. Right, because you have to go through a farm system, as they call it. So like the Yankees, the Astros, the Dodgers, they all have teams under them, all right? And baseball players that got drafted or of course free agents and things like that, international players that are going there and that are looking to fill those spots at the big league level, that around that 25, 27, if you will, there. So that, that is very, very competitive. And you have to work through, hey, it could be rookie ball, it could be low A, it could be double A, it could be aaa. You have to make it through all of that as we go. And 70% of first rounder picks, we'll see one day. And we're not even talking about a full season yet. So second round picks will have a 50% chance of playing one day in the big leagues. And another caveat is when you see 20% of pro players, these guys that got drafted and that are playing professional baseball in whatever organization they are playing for, these guys are unbelievable baseball players. They are the best of the best. They're like the 1% of the world or less that are that. But you see the numbers of like how hard it is actually to make it to even the big league. So I always find it funny. And I catch myself too when I'm watching my team, like the big league teams, and there's a guy that's, you know, struggling a little bit. I'm like, oh, what are we doing? Like this. That guy is one of the best players in the world, if not like a top 30. And you know, you see a lot of fans getting all over him are he stinks. He's like, it's like, it's so funny to hear that because he's one of the best in the world at what he does. And then third rounders, 40% a chance of playing one day in the big leagues and then the numbers just can continue to gradually go down. There used to be four 40 plus rounds, now there's 20 rounds. So it would go all the way to 20. And if you want to make a career out of this or even just one full season, the numbers just drastically go down for again, these pro baseball players. And why, why do I mention this? What's the learn of this? Because again, I want you to dream big. There's nothing wrong with, hey, I want to be a big leaguer, okay? But you need to make sure that you're setting yourself up for success whenever you get done playing baseball. And some of us get done playing baseball after high school, some of us get done playing after college, which is incredible. And some of us, if you're lucky enough to get drafted, right, and play professional baseball, 80% of those guys are going to. The life expectancy in the minor leagues is around two years, okay? Two years. If you get drafted or you picked up as a free agent, the life expectancy of you being a pro ball player and then going into your career is two years, okay? And then again we go into the numbers, get into the big leagues and that's amazing, man, if you make it to the big leagues, just incredible, then that's it. But for the guys that don't make it to big leagues, and even if you make it to the big leagues and you play one day or a week, you know eventually you're going to stop playing. So I say all this is set yourself up for success. And as I went back and I rewind a little bit telling, hey, set yourself up to get a good education at a college, right? Have that experience as a student athlete at the next level, because it can change your life. It's changed mine, it's changed. A number of guys that I've worked with and that I've known that go through this with everything that you get from the college baseball pro. Not only the baseball, which is great, right? It's amazing. But honestly, when you get done playing, it's not necessarily the baseball you miss the most. It's the friendship, it's the locker room, it's the brotherhood that you get, the bonds that you get, the leadership skills that you learn, the ups and downs that you have that you have to learn, how to persevere, the team goal environment, all those things. The travel, which is fun and crazy at the same time. Like, it's just insane from a travel standpoint and how it makes you grow as a person to set yourself up for success after baseball is what I'm trying to get at here. Okay, just giving you the numbers that again, 99.9% of us probably not going to make it to the big leagues. So let's, hey, let's play this out and set ourselves up for success of life after baseball. And that's what I do is what I'm trying to help guys go through. Whether I work with you or not, I just want you to have at least that vision. Like, all right, hey, I get it super difficult and I want you to continue to go on the path, but make sure that you have college focused and in line with you because you can get, again, a great education and get all those things that I just mentioned going forward. But you have any questions, if you're interested in working with me, please reach out and we will go from there. And I'll see you in the next video. Take care.
