Alex Swenson (YouTube) lists and briefly defines five types of offers a college (D1 baseball) program might extend to recruits: walk-on (tryout), preferred walk-on (roster spot without athletic scholarship), academic scholarship, athletic scholarship, and a stacked combination of athletic + academic scholarship.

So there's five different offers you could receive from a college program. One is you could be offered to come and walk on, which is tryout. Number two is you could be offered to be a preferred walk on, which is you're just as much of a part of a team. You just don't have an athletic scholarship. Number three is you get an academic scholarship. They offer you an academic scholarship. Number four is they offer you an athletic scholarship. And number five, they stack it. We call it stacking. They offer you an athletic and academic scholarship.
