Alex Swenson explains that September 1 of junior year is when college coaches can legally contact you. Before that, freshmen and sophomores won't hear from programs except at camps or showcases. Juniors should email coaches at schools they want to play for.

Hey, September 1st is a big date if you are a junior in high school going through this college recruiting process because college coaches can now actually contact you. They can call you, they can text you, they can email you back without just camp information. They are free and open to talk to you about the recruiting process, maybe get you on campus, talk to you about your skill set, etc. Talk to you about their program and their facilities. All that good stuff. So if you're a sophomore or freshman, they can't talk to you before September 1st of your junior year unless you go to their college camps or at a particular showcase. That's where the gray area is. But juniors, okay, on September one, make sure that you are sending out emails to these college coaches and schools that you are interested to be proactive and start a dialogue. Good luck.
